Week 5

Week 5 Entry
Write a short essay of about 400 words about the below stated issue: news and you.
#Who owns the newspapers and TV stations in your country? Do you think this has an effect on the news that you hear?

In this twentieth centuries , lots of media form had been found and explored. The usage of media has become really massive until it become one of the most vital weapon for a country to connect with its people and also to connect with people around the world. Thus, Malaysia that is my country also one of the country that can't get out from the grasp of the Media power to influences the right mind of its own people.

When talking about media, people who had knowledge and know how to manipulate the media content holds the most great power of it. In my country, mostly all the TV stations and newspaper were owned by the Government. Some of the examples of TV station and newspaper that the government owned are TV1, TV2,TV3 , Berita Harian and Utusan Melayu. Eventhough mostly the media stations are owned by the government but there's also some that are owned by a private company such as Ntv7 and 8tv.

I usually watch channel TV3 whenever I went to watch the television. From my thinking and my perspective point of view, as Tv3 is owned by the government, I can't help but to think that some of the news that the anchor delivered during news time such as Bulletin Utama is being modified so that they can only deliver good news about the government. They always talk and sided with the government no matter what and even if they 'accidentally' record the unpleasant things, they will make a touch up and modified it so it won't scar the government image. From this, I can say that all the TV stations that were owned by the government are all pro-government.

This kind of act is unacceptable because, its not only just cheating the citizens by hiding the truth story of the news but its also poisons the people's mind by making them a stereotypical being and their mind will be closed. When people refused to think openly or outside the box, they are tend to get influenced very easily by the media and whatever that media throws at them , they will believe it whole-heartly. One of the reason that the government do this kind of action because, with the help of media form, they can take control of the citizen's mind without using harsh physical labor or even a threat. As long as they're clean with media support, the government can breathe easy as they know that the citizens will never revolt or do anything rebellious towards the government. The media power helps them to stay on the top as what I said in my second paragraph, " people who had knowledge and know how to manipulate the media content holds the most great power of it". The government are aware of this concept and with that, they really do make a good use of media power that was given on their hands/palms.

Week 4 Entry
# How often do you read the paper or watch the news on TV? How important is it for you to keep up with current events?

Write a short essay of about 400 words about the below stated issue: news and you.

In these modern days, technologies had replaced the way of people getting daily news. Of course there's still the old printed media but the new generation had preferred the modern ways than the old traditional one. I also can be included in the new generation but since I was born as Y-gen, I still prefer the old traditional media than the new tech when I want to read some news.

In my childhood days,  I really like to read news and update myself with recent events that had been happening around me. This interest of mine continues until I've finished high school. When I've entered university life, keeping updating myself with news are no longer important and interests me. I've realized that, I gradually lost my interest with the news as I grow up. The main reason would be, as a university student, I rather sit in my room facing the pc's or laptops than going outside,so that I'm more focused on getting my assignments done and preparing for the finals.

As a university student, I'm not concerning myself with the news and does not have interest in knowing it. But, sometimes, I do check out the news when I really don't have anything else to do. The kind of news I've check out are usually on the television and newspaper. When I'm online, sometimes I've checked yahoo online for any recent news since whenever I wanted to open my mail, I must stop by the main page first. That's why I've read the news.

Other than that, with the recent technologies such as the creation and existence of smartphones, news can reached people in just a minute and thousand times faster than before. The existence of internet also made the network connection goes worldwide making the communication between people much easier and convenient. So it doesn't really a shocking matter if a freshly baked news in one place are getting spread worldwide in just a minute. The modern technologies can make it happens. And In these modern days, people are obliged to have handphones each for their own.  But eventhough with the new mass media, the old traditional media such as the line coverage for television, radio, books, magazine and newspaper are still surviving and  still can compete with the new technologies. This is because, the old traditional media are used by the old generation such as the baby boomers, the X and Y gen. The mass usage of the new technologies started from the Z-generation which when they born, the technology already exists.

#What is theatre? How do you think theatre as a media form communicates messages to its audience. Write at least 400 words.

Theatre is a collaborative form of fine art that uses live performers to present the real experience or imagined event in front of a live audience in a specific place. The performers may communicate the experience towards the audience through gesture, speech, song, music and dance. But here I want to concentrate on the theatre that had become one of the worldwide phenomenon of media form that is the movie theatre.

A movie theatre or also known as cinema, movie house, film house, film theater or picture house is a place usually a building for viewing film. Most but not all movie theaters are commercial operations catering to the general public, who attend by purchasing a ticket. The movie is projected with a projector onto a large projection screen at the front of the auditorium. Most movie theaters are now equipped for digital cinema projection, removing the need to create and transport a physical film print.

In the movie theatre, most of the movies before it started screening, there will be an advertising shown at the very beginning. Many filmgoers complain about commercial advertising shorts stating that their absence would be one of the main advantages of going to a movie theatre, but as for me, the advertising is not really that bothering, in fact, I like it for it giving more time for those who came late to see the opening scene of the movie.

As movie theatres have grown into multiplexes and megaplexes, crowd control has become a major concern. An overcrowded megaplex can be rather unpleasant.  And in these recent years, cinemas have started to show warnings, before the movie starts stating the against using cameras and camcorders during the movie screening. These warning threaten the customers with being removed from the cinema and will arrested by the police. This act is to protect the movie from movie piracy. Some theaters including IMAX have detectors at the door to pick up recording smugglers. At particularly anticipated showings, theatres may employ night vision equipment to detect a working camera during a screening. In some jurisdictions, this is illegal. Other than that, admission to a movie may also be restricted by a motion picture rating system. Children or teenagers below a certain age will not gain access to theaters showing certain movies, or only admitted when accompanied by a parent or other adult.

From my observation of people in my daily lives, so far i've known at least four social/ cultural groups and the media that I think they used. The four social/cultural groups that i've identified are the nerds, the goths, the hipsters and the staright edge.
First, I will explain about the nerds. The nerds or a nerd is a person, typically described as being overly intellectual, obsseive or socially impaired. They usually shown as unpopular, obscure and usually involves in non-mainstream activities such as either the highly technical or relating topics of fiction or fantasy. It bega n from England and the culture has survived much longer than other subculter of the same era and it continues to diversify which explains why the Goth people can be seen amongst the teenagers, young adults, adults and even the old people. And for the media that they interested are the goth usually were associated with their tastes in music, aesthetics and fashion. The music that they created itself encompasses a number of different styles and is popular.

Week 1 entry
#Write an essay about 400 words describing your thoughts on media use. Can include photograph if you want.

Nowadays, media had played such an important roles in our life like never before. Media had existed from a very long time ago, but the media before is very different with recent media. Ages ago, people distinguished media as a form of art, usually described as paintings, sculptures and photographs. And for today's generation, media was described and been delivered in all type of form such as video, audio, music, and et cetera.
The importance of the existence of the media had become crucial due to it had already become part of our lives especially for the Y and Z generation. The fast and rapid evolvement of all the media totally changed the way we live and one of the clear effect that we can see is how people nowadays communicate with each other.
For example, people from the old days usually uses pigeons or people (postman) to send letters, messages to each another. As time pass by, it evolves from using pigeons to telegram and morse code due to the existence and creation of new technologies. But the development did not stop there, lots of new type and form of media are created with the help of the newfound and developed technologies that are evolving from time to time.
And from telegram, morse code, the way of communication undergo a massive change when internet was invented. This is because, the previous use of media for communication only allows one or two-way(one,two people) interaction and usually only occurs within a certain area. The invention of internet connects people from all over the world thus making the far away distance, or the people in different countries felt close with each other. Example for these recent media of communication is the invention of facebook. With facebook, the people can create their profile , be friends, find friends from all over the world. In short, this is one of the advantages when media evolved along with the technologies. But, as the popular phrases sound, "everything had its own pros and cons" , so when this kind of situation looks and seems advantagious, there's also had it sides effect.
One of the side effects were since these people can communicate through phones, computer, laptops, they relied on the internet too much until they've became dependent on it. This situation can be explained with the situation example where two teenagers who sat beside each other who more comfortable using  text or use chatbox to talk to between them rather than talking face to face. They take the media for granted and gradually diminishing the essence of how the traditional and more appropiate communication between people should be.
