Week 3

Week 3 Entry
#What is theatre? How do you think theatre as a media form communicates messages to its audience. Write at least 400 words.

Theatre is a collaborative form of fine art that uses live performers to present the real experience or imagined event in front of a live audience in a specific place. The performers may communicate the experience towards the audience through gesture, speech, song, music and dance. But here I want to concentrate on the theatre that had become one of the worldwide phenomenon of media form that is the movie theatre.

A movie theatre or also known as cinema, movie house, film house, film theater or picture house is a place usually a building for viewing film. Most but not all movie theaters are commercial operations catering to the general public, who attend by purchasing a ticket. The movie is projected with a projector onto a large projection screen at the front of the auditorium. Most movie theaters are now equipped for digital cinema projection, removing the need to create and transport a physical film print.

In the movie theatre, most of the movies before it started screening, there will be an advertising shown at the very beginning. Many filmgoers complain about commercial advertising shorts stating that their absence would be one of the main advantages of going to a movie theatre, but as for me, the advertising is not really that bothering, in fact, I like it for it giving more time for those who came late to see the opening scene of the movie.

As movie theatres have grown into multiplexes and megaplexes, crowd control has become a major concern. An overcrowded megaplex can be rather unpleasant.  And in these recent years, cinemas have started to show warnings, before the movie starts stating the against using cameras and camcorders during the movie screening. These warning threaten the customers with being removed from the cinema and will arrested by the police. This act is to protect the movie from movie piracy. Some theaters including IMAX have detectors at the door to pick up recording smugglers. At particularly anticipated showings, theatres may employ night vision equipment to detect a working camera during a screening. In some jurisdictions, this is illegal. Other than that, admission to a movie may also be restricted by a motion picture rating system. Children or teenagers below a certain age will not gain access to theaters showing certain movies, or only admitted when accompanied by a parent or other adult.
